A fungal infection that affects animals and humans.
What is a zoonotic disease?
A disease that affects humans and animals (vertebrate) and can be transferred between them.

when a disease is transferred between animals and humans.
where does the name ringworm come from?
the infection appears as ring shaped lesions
what are the three types of fungi that cause ringworm called?
mircosporum, thrichophyton and epidermophyton
what types of animals is ringworm more common in?
large populations of animals, old or young, immuno compromised
what does topical treatment mean?
the medicine treats the area that is effected
name 3 signs and symptoms of ringworm
red scales on skin, raised red lesions, baldness, redness around nails, rough or brittle nails and dandruff
how is ringworm transmitted?
direct and indirect contact
what is direct contact?
the touching of skin, body parts and bodily fluid
what is in direct contact?
touching other surfaces that an infected animal/human has also touched
how do vets test for ringworm?
take a culture sample (hair or skin cells) and have it tested
what are the 3 treatments for ringworm?
shampoos, lotions/creams, oral medication
what does epicutaneous mean?
medication that goes directly onto the skin

clean environment (bedding,brush,vacuum), grooming animal, regular checks of animal, wear gloves around the infection, clean communal areas, isolate effected animal
