Animal Diversity Flashcards
What 4 characteristics distinguish animals
Cell structure, mode of nutrition, movement, reproduction & development
What is an extracellular matrix (ECM)?
Strong fibers on the outside of an animal cell which give structural support
What features are distinct to an animal cell
lack cell wall, have an ECM , have unique cell junctions - anchoring, tight, gap - to hold cells in place & allow comm btw cells
Are animals autotrophs or heterotrophs?
Heterotrophs
What is a heterotroph?
An organism which must ingest organic molecules from other organisms in order to synthesise its own organic compounds.
Name some modes of feeding
suspension, bulk, fluid
What systems co-ordinate movement and prey capture in an animals body?
muscular-skeletal system, sensory, nervous system
Also: muscle tissue is unique to animals fyi
What is metamorphis in animal development?
an unusual development phenomenon where an organism changes from juvenile to adult form
How can metamorphis be beneficial?
It reduces competition between adults and juveniles as juveniles/adults occupy different habitats so it disperses the species over long distances
In which Eon did multi-cellular life arise?
At the end of the Proterozoic Eon
What are the 3 proposed causes of the profusion of animal phyla during the Cambrian explosion?
- Favorable environment - warm, wet, incr. oxygen in atm
- Evolution of Hox gene complex permitted variation in morphology
- As new predators evolved, prey developed counteradaptations
How long ago did vertebrates appear and plants and animals colonize land?
520mya
The animal kingdom is monophyletic - what does this mean?
All taxa evolved from a single common ancestor
What is believed to be the closest living relative of animals?
Choanoflagellate - a flagellated protist
What 3 features of body plans have scientists traditionally used to classify animal diversity?
- Presence/ absence of different tissue types
- Type of body symmetry
- Features of embryonic development
