Animal cordination, control and homeostasis Flashcards
What are hormones?
small chemicals that release into the blood stream. they attach to specific cells that have correct receptors which causes a change in cells
What are functions of target organs?
1) pituitary gland : master gland that produces multiple hormones that regulate body conditions and the hormones released controls what other glands do
2) thyroid glands : release thyroxine -> regulates date of metabolism, heart rate temperature
3) adrenal glands : release adrenaline for fifth or flight response
4) pancreas - releases insulin to regulate the blood glucose concentration
5) testes - produces testerone and controls sperm production
6. ovaries - release oestrogen for puberty and menuetral cycle in
Describe differences in endocrine and nervous systems.
Endocrine systems:
- relies on hormones
- transported by blood & glands
- spread slowly
- effects last longer
- acts more generally
Nervous system:
-relies on electrical impulses
- transported through nerve cells
-very fast
- effects aren’t long lasting
- acts on precise area
