Animal Coordination, Control & Homeostasis Flashcards
What is a hormone?
A chemical substance that alters the activity of the specific target organ
What do hormones travel through?
Bloodstreams
What is the endocrine system?
the collection of glands that produce hormones that regulate metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sexual function, reproduction, sleep, and mood, among other things
What gland is known as the master gland?
The pituitary gland
What part of the brain controls water balance, temperature and secretion of hormones?
The hypothalamus
What is homeostasis?
The control over an internal environment to be constant
What is the negative feedback mechanism?
A respond to a different condition which is not the ideal condition
If a level in the negative feedback increases then what will the control do?
It will lower the level back to the ideal level
What stimulates the hypothalamus to release TRH?
Low levels of thyroxine
What hormone makes the Thyroid release more thyroxine?
TSH
What is the effect of adrenaline?
Increases heart rate, blood flow, blood pressure and delivers oxygen and glucose to the brain and muscle better
What is needed for respiration?
Glucose
If glucose concentration is too high, what will the liver cells and muscle cells do?
They will convert excess glucose into glycogen
What hormone regulates glucose concentration and where is it produced?
Insulin regulates glucose concentration and is produced in the pancreas
What causes type 1 diabetes?
When the immune system attacks the pancreas which damages and destroys the cells that produce insulin
