Animal Cells Flashcards
Cell membrane
The thin covering that surrounds the organelles inside the cell and controls the passage of materials in or out of the cell. The is the outer boundary of the animal cell.
Cytoplasm
The jelly-like substance that holds all the organelles in place. Food and oxygen move through the cytoplasm.
Ribosomes
Tiny organelles that help make protein. There are many of them in the cytoplasm.
Golgi apparatus
A folded organelle that combines proteins made by the endoplasmic reticulum and delivers them to the rest of the cell and outside cells.
Lysosomes
They break down food and digest waste.
Endoplasmic Reticulum
A folded organelle that makes protein
Vacuole
A sac-like organelle that stores excess food, waste and other substances. Surrounded by a membrane. Animal cells have several smaller membranes
Nucleas
A large organelle that is easy to see under magnification. It controls activities such as growth
Mitochondria
Is the powerhouse of the cell. Breaks down food particles and uses it to fuel the cell’s activities. The number of mitochondria varies depending of the task of the cell
