Animal Behavior Flashcards
process in which the responses of the organism are modified as a result of experience
learning
a form of learning in which an animal comes to ignore a persistent stimulus so it can go about its business
habituation
type of learning in which one stimulus becomes linked to another through experience
associative learning
type of associative learning; Ivan Pavlov trained dogs to associate the sound of a bell with food
classical conditioning
trial and error learning; an animal learns to associate one of its own behaviors with a reward or punishment and then repeats or avoids that behavior
operant conditioning
learning that occurs during a sensitive or critical period in the early life of an individual and is irreversible for the length of that period
imprinting
any kind of interaction between two or more animals of the same species
social behavior
enables the individuals to carry out a behavior in a group
cooperation
aggressive behavior; threats or combat to settle disputes between individuals
agonistic behavior
pecking order behaviors that dictate the social position of an animal in a culture (commonly seen in hens)
dominance hierarchies
defending an area from which the other members of the community are excluded
territoriality
reduces an individual’s reproductive fitness while increasing the fitness of the group or family (kin selection)
altruism
innate, stereotypical behavior that once begun is continued to completion no matter how useless or silly looking; initiated by sign stimuli
fixed action pattern
