labored breathing
Cardiovascular Disorders
disorders relating to the heart
Congestive Heart Failure
condition where the heart is unable to pump an adequate amount of blood to the body’s tissue
Pulse Rate
measurement of the heart rate or the number of times the heart beats per minute
Beats Per Minute (BPM)
number of heartbeats per minute
Pulse Rate Frequency
number of beats per minute
Pulse Rate Quality
tension on the arterial wall; an indication of the volume of blood flow
Physical Activity
bodily activity which enhances o maintains health
Atmospheric Conditions
weather conditions in the surrounding area
Auscultate

Femoral Pulse
pulse found inside the thigh of the hind leg
Arrhythmia
irregular rhythm in the heart
Panting
shorth quick breaths
Colic
abdominal pain in horses
Trachea
large membrane tube which allows air to pass to and from the lungs
Gut Motility
ability to move and pass material through the gut
Ambient Temperature
temperature of the environment or air
Diagnosis
determination of the cause or nature of a condition
Complete Blood Count (CBC)
determines the number and type of blood cells present
Plasma
liquid portion of blood
Red Blood Cells
also known as erythrocytes; are produced in bone marrow and carry oxygen to the lungs
White Blood Cells
defend the body from invading organisms
Platelets
also known as thrombocytes; are responsible for clotting and increase with injury
Blood Clotting
prevents bleeding when a blood vessel is injured
Autoimmune
immune response which attacks an animals own tissues and cells
Bone Marrow
soft, fatty tissue within the bone which is a major area for blood cell production
Packed Cell Volume
used to determine the portion, or percentage, of the whole volume of blood occupied by red blood cells
Red Blood Cell Count
number of red blood cells in a unit volume of blood and can be used to detect a problem with red blood cell production
Hemoglobin
carries oxygen to the red blood cells and helps move them to other tissues
Polycythemia
decreased blood flow
Dehydration
loss of water from the body
Lymph Nodes
gland masses of tissue which contain cells
Inflammation
redness, swelling or pain on an area of the body
Leukemia
form of cancer of the bone marrow which prevents an animal from producing a normal level of red and white blood cells and platelets
Jugular
any of the three large veins in the neck
Cephalic
vein located in the front leg
Saphenous
two large veins neat the thigh in the hind leg
Thoracic Inlet
opening at the top of the thoracic cavity
Vasculature
arrangement of blood cells within the body
Thoracic
relating to the thorax which is the cavity enclosed within the ribs and sternum
Bevel
small hole on the needle which allows the blood to blow into the syringe
Medial Saphenous
small vein located on the inside hind leg
Intravenous (IV) Injection
injection within the vein
Caudal Tail Vein
small vein located underneath the cattle’s tail
Vaccinations
medicines which contain weakened or dead bacteria and/or viruses which are injected into an animal to allow their body to create antibodies against the disease
Antibodies
cells of the immune system which kill foreign objects in the body
Drug Residue
substances of a drug which remain in the tissue of the animal
Abscess
swollen area in body tissue which contains pus
Intramuscular
injection of a substance directly into the muscle
Subcutaneous
injection used to inject a dug into the tissue layer between the skin and the muscle
Syringe Barrel
part of the syringe which holds the medicine
Syringe Needle
mechanism through which the fluid is injected into the animal
Guage
thickness, size or measure of an object
Rabies
contagious fatal viral disease which is transmitted by saliva
Distemper
infectious viral disease in dogs
Adenovirus
disease of the upper respiratory system
Bordetella
also referred to as kennel cough; contagious respiratory disease in dogs
Rhinotracheitis
disease which causes an upper respiratory infection in cats
Calicivirus
respiratory disease which affects cats
