A

What were Tithings?

A

A group of 10 men (aged 14+) were responsible for each other’s behaviour. If one of them broke a law, the other members of the tithing had to bring them to court or pay a fine.

A

This is when the entire village is expected to join a hunt to catch the criminal. if a person didn’t join then the whole village would pay a heavy fine.

A

The accused and accuser take part in dangerous and painful tests. This was a very superstitious trial.

A

This was a trial where there’s an accuser and accused who would give their version of the event and it was up to the jury to decide who was telling the truth.

What is Murdrum?

A

It is a law created by William the first where if an Anglo Saxon killed a Norman and was not captured, then the hundred closest to where the body was found would have so pay a sum of money. They replaced wergild with this.

What were forest laws?

A

These were when you had to pay to hunt in areas of forest, if you could not pay then you had no right to hunt in these forests. This affected the Anglo Saxons negatively as they used these forests to get food and all of their suplies.

What is Serfdom?

A

This is where Serfs were legally bound to work for their lord and weren’t allowed to leave their village as running away was a crim punishable by death.
