Major Alan Wilson commanded 34 troops known as the Shangani Patrol which crossed the Shangani River and hid close outside Lobengula’s quarters in the night. The next morning the Matabele surrounded the Shangani Patrol shocking them. 31 died while the remaining 3 escaped.
