Anger management skills (AO1) Flashcards
What are the 5 cognitive techniques therapists teach in anger management?
Belief changing
Imagery
Visualisation
Self-talk
Attention control
What is ‘belief changing’?
Changing the patient’s belief (themselves or through therapy) to a more adaptive belief with positive behavioural consequences
What is ‘imagery’?
Creating mental images to escape the immediate effects of stress
What is ‘visualisation’?
Creating a mental image of what you want to happen or feel, locking into the ‘perfect performance’
Define ‘self-talk’.
Developing positive thoughts about one’s actions and focusing on self-instructing motivational content
Define ‘attention control’.
Maintaining concentration on appropriate cues
What are the 2 behavioural techniques therapists teach in anger management?
Social skills training
Assertion training
What is ‘social skills training’? (2 points)
Guidance on how to express interest and kindness to another person
Likely to lead to more positive interactions from them towards you
What is ‘assertion training’? (2 points)
Guidance on how to express emotions in an adaptive way
E.g. calmly approach the person to discuss one’s feelings openly so they can empathise and also be aware of the situation
What are the 3 physiological techniques therapists teach in anger management?
Biofeedback
Breathing control
Progressive muscular relaxation (PMR)
What is ‘biofeedback’? (2 points)
Information about the changes in physiological variables
The performer watches a monitor displaying changes in readings e.g. heart rate monitor
Define ‘breathing control’. (2 points)
Using diaphragmatic breathing (breathing deeply) as a means of focusing on relaxation
Encourages full oxygen exchange, reduction of heart rate and stabilisation of blood pressure
What is ‘progressive muscular relaxation (PMR)’? (2 points)
Learning to be aware of the tension present in muscles and removing it by relaxing
Done by alternating extreme tension that is held for a few seconds before being released
