What is anger management?
A form of cognitive behavioural therapy and has a three stage approach
What is the three stage approach of anger management?
Cognitive preparation, skill acquisition and application practice
Cognitive preparation
Offender learns to identify the cues for their anger and considers if their responses were rational and the therapist helps redefine the situation as non threatening
Skill Acquisition
Offender learns skills to manage their own behaviour in anger provoking situations using cognitive, behavioural or physiological
Application practice
Offenders practice their new skills through role-play. The therapist deliberately provokes them to see how they react. The therapist will positively reinforce successful strategies.
What are the advantages of anger management?
- Multidisciplinary approach that acknowledges the complexity of offending behaviour
- Unlike behaviour modification that tries to get to the root of behaviour
What are the disadvantages of anger management?
- Assumption that anger causes offending may be false
- They are expensive programmes
- Success is based on the commitment of the partner
