Aneurysms Flashcards

1
Q

Q

Aneurysms Explained

A

Hypertension weakens the walls of ARTERIES, increasing development of bulges in arterial walls called ANEURYSMS

Aneurysms cause turbulent blood flow and are susceptible to rupture

Q

3 Types of Aneurysm

A
  1. Saccular
    - outward bubble
  2. Fusiform
    - entire circumference of artery bulges
  3. Pseudo
    - blood gets in between the walls of the artery

Q

Common Aneurysms

A

Abdominal Aortic (AAA)

  • above or below renal artery
  • Infrarenal: Below
  • Suprarenal: Above

Thoracic Aortic
-Thoracic cavity

Cerebral
-Brain

Variations: Dissecting aortic aneurysm, false (pseudo) aneurisms

Q
  1. False (Pseudo) Aneurysm
A
  • Localized dissection or tear in inner artery wall
  • Type of hematoma
  • Blood flows in-between artery wall
  • Complication of vascular interventional procedures

Q

Aortic Aneurysm types

Q

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA)

A

Auscultation of a bruit over the abdominal aorta suggests the presence of an aneurysm

***If a pulsatile mass is evident in the abdomen during inspection or light palpation, deep palpation should NOT be preformed until possibility of AAA is ruled out

Q

Dissection

A

Dissecting Aneurysm:

-Layers of the wall of the artery are separated and blood enters the region

16
Q

Dissection VS Aneurysm

A

Aneurysm: Bulge
Dissection: Tear between layers (can tear all the way down)

17
Q

Aortic Dissection Manifestations

A

-Severe sudden, tearing pain

Early Stages:
-BP Elevated

Later Stages:

  • BP may be unobtainable
  • Syncope, hemiplegia (weakness), paralysis of lower extremities
  • Cardiovascular collapse»Shock»Death!
18
Q

Aortic Dissection Treatment

A

Emergent Surgery

Emergency pharmacotherapy

  • Beta blockers
  • Nitrates
