Propofol
Mechanism: activates GABAa receptors, anti-emetic
Use: induction and maintenance of anesthesia, esp. outpatient
Side Effects: CNS depression, respiratory depression, pain on injection
Kinetics:quick onset, short duration, moderate elimination
- *causes intense, sometimes sexual dreams**
- *causes excitement on injection (similar to alcohol)**
Sodium Thiopental
Mechanism: activates GABAa receptors
Use: induction of anesthesia
Side Effects: respiratory depression, CNS depression, Vasodilation, necrosis/inflammation if injected into artery
Kinetics: quick onset, short duration, slow elimination
- *good for patients with arrhythmias**
- *intense hangover effect**
