Anemia Due to Underproduction Flashcards
What are some causes of underproduction anemia? What characterizes underproduction anemia?
Iron deficiency, B12 deficiency, folate deficiency, renal failure (Less EPO), damage to bone marrow. Low reticulocyte count
How does Parvovirus B19 contribute to underproduction anemia? In wha situation would a person experience significant anemia with a PB19 infection? Tx?
Infects progenitor RBCs and temporarily halts erythropoesis. With preexisting BM stress (sickle cell disease). Tx is supportive
What is aplastic anemia? What can cause it? What does biopsy reveal? Tx?
Damage to hematopoietic SCs resulting in pancytopenia and low reticulocyte count; Drugs/chemicals, viruses, autoimmune; Empty, fatty bone biopsy; Tx: cessation of drug, supportive care, marrow-stimulating factors (EPO, GM-CSF, G-CSF), Immunosuppresion, BM transplant
What is myelophthisic process?
Pathologic process that replaces BM resulting in pancytopenia
