Anemia Due to Underproduction Flashcards

1
Q

What are some causes of underproduction anemia? What characterizes underproduction anemia?

Q

How does Parvovirus B19 contribute to underproduction anemia? In wha situation would a person experience significant anemia with a PB19 infection? Tx?

A

Infects progenitor RBCs and temporarily halts erythropoesis. With preexisting BM stress (sickle cell disease). Tx is supportive

Q

What is aplastic anemia? What can cause it? What does biopsy reveal? Tx?

A

Damage to hematopoietic SCs resulting in pancytopenia and low reticulocyte count; Drugs/chemicals, viruses, autoimmune; Empty, fatty bone biopsy; Tx: cessation of drug, supportive care, marrow-stimulating factors (EPO, GM-CSF, G-CSF), Immunosuppresion, BM transplant
