anemia drugs Flashcards
treatment for iron def
ferrous sulfate
ferrous gluconate
ferrous fumarate
iron dextran = parenteral iron
deferoxamine
treatment for acute iron tox - it chelates iron
cyanocobalamin
therapeutic vit B12
nasal, oral, parenterally (this is how its usually given)
prefered for long term use becuase it doesnt cause antibody response like in other agents
hydroxocobalmin
therapeutic vit B12
higly protein bound and remians in circ longer
some patienst produce antibodies to this bound to proteins in the blood (transcobalamin2)
treatment for normocytic anemia
erythropoietin
treatment for folic acid def
folic acid
leucovorin
epoetin alpha (erythorpoeitin)
stimulates red cell production, reticulocyte release
used in anemia pateints with chronic renal failure,HIV infection, or cancer patients getting chemo
adverse effects = hypertension, thrombosis
filgrastim (G-CSF)
use in a stem cell donor to mobilize stem cells for harvest
stimulates granulocytes
prevents and treats cytotoxic chemotherapy related neutropeai
reduces time to engraftment after autologous stem cell transplant
sargramostim (GM-CSF)
uses similar to filgrastim (G-CSF)
adverse effects are common: fever, malaise, arthralgia, myalgia, capillary leak syndrome (peripheral edema, pleural and pericardial effusions)
oprelvekin (IL-11)
promotes megakaryopoiesis
increases platlet numbers
used in pateinst recieaving cytotoxic chemo
