Anemia Flashcards
What is Anemia
Reduced Oxygen Carrying Capacity of RBCs
Anemia may result from:
-Decreased number of circulating RBCc
-Reduced PCV
-Reduced [Hb]
Anemia Classifications (2)
- Bone Marrow Response
- RBC size and hemoglobin concentration
What are the types of anemia that are classified according to bone marrow response?
Regenerative and Nonregenerative
What is regenerative anemia?
Bone marrow responding to blood loss or destruction by increasing RBC production and releasing immature RBC into peripheral blood circulation
What is nonregenerative anemia?
- Bone marrow is unable to respond to the anemic state
- Reticulocytes absent, suggests bone marrow disfunction.
What particular type of anemia is caused by hemolysis resulting from either intrinsic defect or extrinsic factors?
Hemolytic anemia
What are the 3 types of anemia that are classified according to the RBC size?
-Normocytic
-Macrocytic
-Microcytic
What is Normocytic Anemia?
Secondary to a variety of chronic diseases
What is Macrocytic Anemia?
Increase in RBC size, seen with regenerative anemia
What is Microcytic Anemia?
Almost always iron deficiency
IMHA
Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia
What is Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia?
The animal forms antibodies against it’s own RBC
Types of anemia are sometimes named for both RBC size as well as RBC color. What type of anemia would present with increased RBC size and decreased RBC color?
Macrocytic Hypochromic
(suggests regeneration)
Can an RBC be hyperchromic?
No
