Anemia Flashcards
What is Plasma
- The liquid part of our blood *contains proteins essential for immune response
- contains proteins essential for blood clotting
Leukocytes
as a part of the blood
WBC’s
part of the immune system
Erythrocytes
RBC’s
carry oxygen to the tissues and remove carbon dioxide
Platelets
Part of the clotting system
What is Erythropoiesis?
process of making red blood cells
What is the lifespan of a red blood cell in our bodies?
120 days
What are immature red blood cells called?
Reticulocytes
What happens to red blood cell after 120 days in our body?
Hemolysis
This occurs in the liver, spleen and bone marrow
What do we need in order to produce healthy RBC’s?
- adequate amount of iron
- minute (tiny) amounts of vitamin B12 & folic acid
- essential amino acids and carbs
What is Iron Deficiency Anemia?
This occurs when we do not have a sufficient amount of iron in our blood
(Negative iron balance occurs)
What type of Megaloblastic Anemia is there?
Folic Acid deficiency or
Vitamin B12 deficiency
What is Pernicious Anemia?
A type of Vitamin B12 deficient anemia where the person cannot absorb vitamin B12 through GI tract
What is Sickle Cell Anemia
Chronic hemolytic anemia that occurs almost exclusively in African Americans
Hemoglobin has abnormal shape (sickle shaped).
Who is at risk for IRON deficient anemia?
- Menstrating women
- Pregnant/Nursing women
- Rapidly growing adolescents
- Person with GI bleed
treating Anemia
(across the lifespan)
Children
- make sure children have proper nutrition
- epoetin has not been established as safe in children
- dosage based on age and weight
- drink iron through straw because it will stain teeth
