Martin Van Buren
He was elected president in 1836, and he had been Jackson’s Vice President and got a lot of his support. He ran against a new party called the Whigs.
Martin Van Buren accomplishments
- Laissez Faire- the government should interfere as little as possible.
- He established federal treasury so that the government can keep its money there; this helped the government money to be safe
General Winfield Scott
He began the US invasion of the Cherokee nation.
Henry Clay
Henry Clay, Speaker of the House, said he would use his influence to make John Quincy Adams the next president, in return for Adams making Clay the Secretary of State.
Osceola
Osceola was the Seminole chief who joined forces with African Americans who wanted to escape slavery and held off attacks using guerilla warfare.
John Tyler
Whigs had nominated Tyler and William Henry Harrison as their candidates.
“Tippencanoe and Tyler too!”
He had become a Whig to run for VP but was actually originally a Democrat. John Tyler had to step up as the president when Harrison died of pneumonia. He basically went against anything the Whigs tried to do. The Whigs kicked Tyler out of the party.
Andrew Jackson
Andrew Jackson was a Democratic a Republican. He wins the Election of 1828. He was a patriot, a self-made man, war hero, and related to the common man. His nickname was “Old Hickory”, because he was as tough as a hickory stick. He created the spoils system.
Jackson hated the national bank. Even though Henry Clay and Daniel Webster tried everything they could, Jackson was reelected. Jackson had the bank go away and all the money went into state banks.
William Henry Harrison
- Caught a cold that turned into pneumonia when giving his Inauguration Speech; it was two hours long.
- He had refused to wear a coat.
- Harrison died 32 days later, causing Tyler to be the first VP to assume the presidency.
John Quincy Adams
Adams won the Election of 1824. He wanted to: improve roads and waterways, build a national university, and set up laboratories. He supported scientific research. It scared many of his opponents as too much government power. He got money for some of it, not all of it. He runs for reelection in 1828, but Andrew Jackson is elected instead.
“Tippecanoe and Tyler too!”
It was the slogan for the Whig’s candidates.
Seminole
They were the Indians in Florida that caused the US army to give up pushing them west, and allowed them to stay in the land. Their chief was Osceola.

The Whig Party
A new party in 1836 that ran against Martin Van Buren. For the next election, they nominated Harrison and Tyler as their candidates. They showed Harrison was a “man of the people”, also shown by a log cabin. They called Van Buren “King Marty” because he spent so much money on furniture for the White House.
Spoils System
It was the practice of replacing government employees with the winner’s supporters. Jackson used this.
“To the victor goes the spoils”
House of Representatives
The Election of 1824 vote went to the House of Representatives. Henry Clay, Speaker of the House, said he would use his influence to make John Quincy Adams president.
