Andrew Jackson Flashcards
Democratic Party
Andrew Jackson was born on the frontier as a poor boy. This lead him to create the Democratic Party after he became involved in politics.
Election of 1824 and 1828
After becoming a hero in the War of 1812, Jackson’s political career gained great popularity. This led him to run for presidency in 1824 where he won the popular vote but not the electoral vote, losing to John Quincy Adams.
The Spoils System
Jackson, contrary to the beliefs of many rich men, thought that civil servants didn’t have lifetime jobs and would remove them when they needed to be.
Tariff
A tax upon imported goods that supports the governments economy and manufacturing.
Trail of Tears
The Creek and Cherokee Indians that Jackson forced to move had to walk a long path to the land that is now Oklahoma. But the harsh winter tormented the Indians and killed many of them on the way there.
Indian Removal Act of 1830 - Supreme Court
This law made it legal for the president to make treaties with American Indians to sell their land for goods.Jackson greatly pushed this law into action and had it passed by Congress in 1830.
The “Five Civilized Tribes”
The Creek, Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, and Seminole American Indian Tribes that lived in the southeast. They hoped to live in peace with whites that lived near them.
Bank of the United States - Issues and the Supreme Court
Jackson hated the Bank of the United States because it represented the rich and elite instead of the common people and workers. He also hated its president, Nicholas Biddle. So when forced to renew the bank’s charter, Jackson decided not to, making many rich men angry.
Trail of Tears (Continued)
Some Seminoles fought against this mistreatment for 10 years under the leadership of Osceola. Others would escape to Florida to hide.
The “Five Civilized Tribes” (Continued)
To live in peace they tried to adjust their ways of living to be better matched towards the ways the white people lived, but this didn’t work.
Indian Removal Act of 1830 - Supreme Court (Continued)
The Supreme Court then said that the Indians still had a right to deny these treaties and keep their lands. But Jackson disregarded this right and then forced the Indians to move from their land if they refused selling it.
Democratic Party (Continued)
This party represented the poor common people and workers of the U.S. instead of the rich and elite and focused on giving those workers power in government.
Election of 1824 and 1828 (Continued)
But Jackson ran again in 1828 and with the help of new voters who had recently gain the right to vote, Jackson won by a landslide and became president.
The Spoils System (Continued)
Jackson would then replace those servants with his democratic supporters. This then allowed many of Jackson’s opponents to complain about Jackson, calling it the spoils system.
Bank of the United States - Issues and the Supreme Court (Continued)
But Jackson continued this assault by having the national treasury move the money from the bank into smaller state banks. This completely destroyed the bank, making Jackson feel like he won.
