Andrade Flashcards
Doodling Study
Aim
Whether doodling aid a person’s concentration while completing task.
Hypothesis
Can doodling help a person’s concentration while doing recall task?
Researcher Method
Lad Experiment
Strengths
- Control every aspect
- Standardized
- Easily replicated
Weakness
- Demand characteristics
- Lower ecological validity
Independent Variable
Doodling
Dependent Variable
- Recall info
- False alarms
- Memory scores
Quantitative Data
- 277 wpm recording
- 2.5 minute tape
- ages 18-55
- 40 participants (17F:3M) (18F:2M)
- All listened to the tape
- Test was counterbalanced
Procedure
- They were given standardized instructions
- Given an A4 sheet and pencil
- 2.5 minute mock-telephone message played with 8 party-goer names and 8 place-names
- Wrote down names of people who could come to the party and shaded shapes
- Tested on party-goers names and surprise test on place-names.
Conclusion
Doodling helped with concentration when used to focus on a primary task.
Background
Previous research suggested that doodling might help concentration and prevent daydreaming. Andrade wanted to explore if this was true, specifically in tasks involving memory and attention.
Control Group
Listened to the message without doodling.
Experimental Group
Listened to the message and were given a piece of paper with shapes to doodle in.
Key Findings
The doodling group recalled 29% more information than the non-doodling group.
