about/defining androgyny
A
- definition in every day life= having the appearance of someone who cannot be clearly identified as male or female
- definition to psychologists= personality type characterised by a balance of masculine and feminine traits, attitudes and behaviours
- EX man who is competitive and caring
- people who are androgynous are seen to have psychological wellbeing because they can adapt to a range of situations which a non-androgynous person would find hard
- androgynous can be measured by the BSRI

- respondents rate themselves on a seven point rating scale (1= never true of me and 7=always true of me)
- scores get classified into 2 dimensions masculinity-femininity and androgynous-undifferentiated
- high masculine, low feminine= masculine
- high feminine,low masculine=feminine
- high masculine, high females=androgynous
- low masculine,low feminine=undifferentiated
