Who oversees cases in the Crown Court?
Crown Court cases are overseen by a judge and a jury.
What types of cases are heard by the Crown Court?
The Crown Court hears all indictable offences and triable either way offences if the Magistrates’ Court finds the case too serious or the defendant chooses a jury trial.
What happens if a defendant is found guilty in the Crown Court?
If D pleads/found guilty, D is sentenced by a judge, with penalties ranging up to life imprisonment or unlimited fines. Community orders may also be imposed.
Can the Crown Court hear appeals from the Magistrates’ Court?
They also hear appeals from the Magistrates’ Court.
Judge can confirm, reverse, or vary convictions, and may increase or decrease the sentence.
