about 1000 BCE
When is the archaic period said to have began?
about 700 BCE
When is the classical period said to have began?
about 500 BCE
When is the Hellenistic period said to have began?
about 400 BCE, or with the reign of Alexander the Great (336 BCE)
What is a kouroi and what is a kourai/kore?
A kouroi was a free standing, usually nude sculpture of a young man. Kourai were the female versions.
Why were female kourai so few and far between?
The female nude was not normalized until the classical period.
What Greek artistic period did the kouroi characterize?
the archaic period
What influence can clearly be seen in Greek archaic art, especially kouroi?
Egyptian influence.
What was a very large political factor that affected the transition between the archaic and classical periods?
The introduction of democracy, and in turn the decrease in the aristocratic-associated kouroi.
What two famous works were created in the classical period by Phidias?
The Parthenon and the Statue of Zeus.

Classical. It was one of the first female nude sculptures. It was sculpted by Praxiteles.
