Q

What is happening in the Polykleitos, Doryphoros?

A

The Polykleitos, Doryphoros is the most copied Roman sculpture there is. We know of 50 of them, but there are probably more we don’t because they probably have been damaged too much for us to figure that out. Polykleitos is a big math nerd, he loves symmetry, balance, and even numbers. He made the original in bronze to show what the male body should be from math and formulas. This is the perfect body that he wrote in a book called Kanon. The book doesn’t survive, but we know of it because the Romans quoted from it for 800 years.

What is happening in the Praxiteles, Hermes and Dionysus?

A

The Praxiteles, Hermes and Dionysus is a roman copy. Praxiteles didn’t put them in Kanon not because he doesn’t know what it is, but because he just didn’t want to.

Q

What is the anatomy/proportion in the Praxiteles, Hermes and Dionysus?

A

There is ponderation in the hips. The hips are going one, and the shoulders are going another which creates a s curve and this a more natural stance. Hermes is not in Kanon because his hair is asymmetrical, his torso is too long, and legs are too short. Dionysus is also not in Kanon because he is a baby.

Q

How is the Parthenon perfect?

A

The reason that the Parthenon is perfect is because the doric temple is a 9 x 4 which is called the golden rectangle. It is so perfect that it has a formula y = 2x + 1.

Q

How is the Parthenon imperfect, and why did they do this?

A

The Parthenon is imperfect because it is the perfect doric temple, but it has an ionic frieze. They did this because Ionians were going to visit it the most, so they were trying to keep them happy. There is entasis in the Parthenon columns, which is a bulge that is ⅓ of the way up. They did this so that you would have to look up. They had smaller column spacing, so that you would have to look in the middle and up to where Athena and the pediment is. The stylobate is curved 4 inches upward. They did this to make it look like the stairs were rising.

Q

How does the Delian League fit into the Parthenon?

A

The Delian League fits into this because Athens founded the Delian League, which is a way to protect themselves in case the Persians try to invade Greece again. It was in Delos, but that is not where they had the money, the money was in Athens. Pericles was not the king, but a statesman and a good public speaker. Whatever he said, most people listened to him. He takes 80% of the Delian league and embezzles it to build the Acropolis. The Greeks didn’t know he did this otherwise they wouldn’t have built the Acropolis.

Q

What are the 5 parts of the temple?

A

The 5 parts to a temple are the innermost room where the statue is and that is a Cella or naos. In front of the Cella or naos is the pronaos. On the other side of the Cella is the opisthodomos. All three of the rooms are on the stylobate. All of the columns have a perimeter which is the colonnade.

Q

How does the “Venus” de “Milo” fit into humanism?

A

The “Venus” de Milo is Aphrodite; we know that her left hand came out and had apples in them. She has the apple of Paris, which is an automatic sex symbol for Greeks
Since Aphrodite is the goddess of love and she is naked it is a depiction of sexuality. She is barely holding up her peplos, it is following down, and she is looking at the viewer. She is doing a primal function of the human body.

Q

How does Aphrodite of Knidos fit into humanism?

A

Aphrodite of Knidos is a roman copy, it has a support between her and the dress. She is the first naked woman in sculpture and a goddess. She is looking down at the water, wanting to take a bath. She is covering up her genital area. She is not in Kanon,
because it only works for male bodies. In her hips she has ponderation. This is the 2nd step of the pedestal, but this sculpture is not sexual.

What is the Dying Gaul Chief?
The Dying Gaul Chief is about how they were nomadic people invading Pergamum. The man has stabbed him in the heart and has killed his wife. He did this because if they were found since they were part of the nomadic group, he would have been tied up to the back of a chariot and dragged through the town with people throwing stuff at him. This death would have been more painful than killing himself. He killed his wife because if they caught them then she would experience some sort of assault. The Greeks see this as an honorable thing to do because this death is preventing an assault and a much more brutal death. The Pergamum would have seen this as happy because they were invading the town.

The new characteristics are attention to the knee, line on his back, attention to more anatomy, he’s nude, geometric eyes, negative space around his arms, legs, and torso, it has no pillar and has the inguinal ligament. The anatomy was not entirely successful because the ligament is wrong. He can have him be nude because name and image is gone.

42
How is the Boy by Kritios "breaking" the box around him?
The Boy by Kritios is a 4-foot-tall sculpture and it breaks the convention of Kori.

52

The dolphin room was a room just to be a room. The bull leaping has a leaper and 2 figures that are goddesses, that is holding the bull down. In this the leaper and the two other figures are two different colored skin. For this you can change your skin color during it and then go back to your original after you complete it. There are two theories of what is going on. The first one is this coming-of-age ritual for men. The second one is this is a professional sport for them, and men and women did it.

What does the Bull leaper and Tiryns, and Boar Hunt tell us about the Myceneans?
The bull leaping has no goddess holding it down in the front or back. They believed that men should do things themselves. 56
Why are these changes done in the Dying Warriors from the Temple of Athena at Aegina?
