Nile River
world’s longest river and made Egypt a thriving civilization; the lifeblood of Egypt
Mediterranean Sea
this sea touches southern Europe, Northern Africa, and western Asia
Sahara Desert
the world’s largest hot desert that covers most of northern Africa; anywhere in Egypt that doesn’t touch the Nile River
Upper Egypt
confusingly opposite, Upper Egypt is in the south, but upstream the Nile
Lower Egypt
confusingly opposite, Lower Egypt is in the north, but downstream the Nile
Delta
An area where the soil and minerals of a river are deposited, usually near the mouth or entrance of a river
Shaduf
a type of irrigation using pulleys that made Egyptian farming possible
Dynasty
a line of rulers that come from the same family
Pharaoh
the king of Egypt, considered a god on earth
Social Hierarchy
an organization of people with the fewest people at the top with the most power and the most people at the bottom with the least amount of power
Artisans
a worker specializing in making things with their hands
Hieroglyphics
Egyptian writing, more like pictures than letters
Scribe
a person who writes down records
Pyramids
giant monuments and burial sites for Egyptian Pharaohs
Mummification
the preparation of the body for the afterlife; includes removing organs and wrapping/sealing the body for preservation
Sarcophagus
decorated stone coffin for pharaohs and other important individuals
Papyrus
similar to paper, it’s a thin parchment for writing on
Rosetta Stone
a giant black stone found in 1799 that had 3 major languages on it. It is the only way we can translate hieroglyphics

the belief in only one god

the world’s first and oldest monotheistic religion
