This was the capital of the Tang Dynasty. Under their rule it grew to the largest city in the world. Chang ‘an may have been the largest planned city also. Sitting at one end of the silk road this city was thriving as a cultural and commercial center. The city welcomed foreigners but they had to stay separate from the others
The Grand Cannal
The Grand Cannal was used to carry goods for trade. It was a series of waterways that linked cities together. It was also used for farming, by transporting goods and crops to major cities. It took thousands of peasants to build the cannal and many of them died from harsh working conditions.
Fall of the Tang
during much of the Tang rule China was at war reunited once again. This allowed military leaders to gain power. Drought, Famine and, high taxes led to more problems. Military leaders took power and this led to several riots. The last tang rulers where overthrown in 907
Song Dynasty
China was finally out of chaos and was reunited once again. with a population around 100 million people, China was the largest country in the world. During the Song dynasty agriculture improved with new irrigation techniques. Underground wells where also used, as well as the invention known as the dragon backbone pump. To protect the empire Song rulers kept a huge army. But, to limit the armies power they gave control to government leaders who where not in the military.
Confucionism
Confucius was one of Chinas most famous philosophers. He strongly believed in the value of self-improvment and education. His philosophy can be found in the book called the Anelects.
Confucianism and the Government
Confucianism had a large impact on the Chinese government. it also emphasized the importance of education. The government officials and tee subjects where supposed to focus on relationships and society
Scholar Officals
Scholar officials where people who passed the civil service exams and now worked in government. During the Tangy scholar officials could be picked through family but in the Song they picked just the people who had high test scores.
Gunpowder
The Chinese alchemist invented this first to find a substance that caused people to live forever. then they used it for fireworks and then put it in guns for military reasons
Porcelain
This is a fine pottery invented by the Chinese. this was made by combining clay and other minerals. This became big in the industry of trade and many of the countries trading with China wanted it
Wood Block Printing
This was invented by the Chinese and made it easier to copy texts and books. It became cheaper to learn because they could make the books easier than before.
Rocket
At first the Chinese used rockets for fireworks and entertainment but then somebody decided to put it in cannons so they could shoot far.
Paper Money
Paper money was invented because they where running out of metals to make the coins out of so they decided to make it paper instead. this caused money to become a lot cheaper to make and a little less valuable
Small Pox Vacine
The Chinese where struggling a lot with this disease until one scientist found the cure. This caused medicine to drastically change and become very innovative
Mechanical Clock
This was invented by the chinese and was a lot more accurate than the ways to tell time before. this was very innovative and sparked the new ideas of clocks and people in the future would make them a lot better.
Junks
These where large boast used by China to trade on the water. They would carry tons of things and help China move across the water a lot faster
