Middle kingdom
Also called Middle Empire. the period in the history of ancient Egypt, c2000–1785 b.c.
Mandate of Heaven
In Chinese history the divine approval right to be the basis of royal authority.
Dynastic cycle
The historical pattern of the rise, decline, and replacement of dynasties.
Feudalism
A political system in which nobles are granted the use of lands that legally belong to their king, in exchange for loyalty and military service/protection.
Cultural diffusion
The spreading of ideas or products from one culture to another.
Confucius
A Chinese teacher and scholar who became minister, when he became in charge crime dropped.
Confucianism
An ethical system sometimes seen as a religion developed from Confucius.
Daoism
A philosophy based on the ideas of the Chinese thinker Laozi, who taught that people should be guided by a universal force called the Dao.
Legalism
A Chinese political philosophy based on the idea that a highly efficient and powerful government is the key to social order.
Silk Road
A system of trade using ancient caravan routes to travel along Central Asia carrying silk and other goods.
Civil Service Exam
An ancient exam that one takes after ten years of studying to become part of the government.
Golden Age
The most flourishing period in the history of a nation.
Empire
A number of people or countries are controlled by a single ruler.
Ethnicity
The state of belonging to a social group that has a common national or cultural tradition.
Warring States Period
The 250 years in Zhou Dynasty where 8 different states were constantly at war.
