Plate tectonics
Movement or separation of earths crust
Beringia
Land bridge between Asian Serbia and American Alaska. People migrate to western hemisphere.
Paleo Indians
Southern migrants from Serbia, ancestors of Navajo and Apache people. Some lived in White Sands region thousands of years after people who made footprints.
Clovis Point
Distinctively shaped spearhead used by Paleo-Indians; named for the place in New, Mexico where it was found. Used to hunt large game.
Hunter-gatherer
A way of life that involved hunting game and gathering food from nature.
Archaic Indians
Descended from Paleo-Indians; different hunting techniques and presence of gathering tools and hunting tools/traps.
Pueblos
“Apartment” buildings, storage spaces and ceremonial centers aka Kivas. Built by ancient Americans in the Southwest around 1000CE.
Pueblo Bonito
Largest residential and ceremonial site, had more than 600 rooms and 35 kivas. Can be visited at Chaco Canyon, New Mexico.
Burial Mounds
Earth “dugouts” built by ancient American people throughout the gigantic drainage of the Ohio and Mississippi River after 2500BP
Chiefdom
A hierarchy leader/chief
Believed to set commands about the labor that’s required to build burial mounds
Cahokia
Largest ceremonial site in ancient North America. Near Mississippi River, hundreds of earthern mounds built by thousands of inhabitants between 800 CE and 1500 CE
Mexica
Empire that stretched from coast to coast across Central Mexico encompassing approx six million people
Tributes
Goods that included food and luxury items (also candidates for human sacrifice). Mexica collected goods from people they conquered.
