1951 Defiance Campaign
An organised campaign of peaceful resistance against 6 policies of Apartheid. To cause overcrowding in prisons and get the government to changes its policies.
- no passbooks
- use of white only spaces
- no bail/fines
No changes in policy was made but an increase in political awareness and support was achieved.
1955 Sophiatown Removals
Originally a whites only town but sewage dump was built which gave access to coloured people.
- Native Resettlement Act in 1954 allowed for the removal of black people from any area.
Sophiatown grew too close to Johannesburg.
- 9th Feb 1955, 60,000 people were removed from homes to the meadowlands
- Some protested with explosives and gunfights
- Carried on for 5 years
1955 Freedom Charter
Freedom Charter issued by ANC to call for individual freedom and that both black and white people deserve to live in the South Africa.
- established in ‘Congress of the people’ meeting
- caught by government forces snd 150 people were charged of high treason
1957 Alexandra Township Boycott
Township located near Johannesburg.
Alexandra township boycotted rent payment to protest the poor living conditions in the homelands.
Mandela and Sisulu were involved in the boycott and lead to many other activist movements
