Anatomy - Wrist And Hand Flashcards
Name the 8 carpal bones of the wrist.
Proximal, lateral > medial: scaphoid, lunate, triquetrum, pisiform
Distal, lateral > medial: trapezium, trapezoid, capitate, hamate
How many phalanges are in the hand?
14 (3 on each digit and 2 on thumb)
Describe pronator teres.
Origin: ulnar head - coronoid process; humeral head - medial epicondyle of humerus
Insertion: laterally to mid shaft of radius
Innervation: median nerve
Movements: pronation and flexion of forearm
Describe flexor carpi radialis.
Origin: medial epicondyle of humerus
Insertion: base of metacarpals 2 and 3
Innervation: median nerve
Movements: flexion (and abduction?) of wrist joint
Describe palmaris longus.
*not present in everyone* Origin: medial epicondyle of humerus Insertion: flexor retinaculum of wrist Innervation: median nerve Movements: flexion at wrist
Describe flexor carpi ulnaris.
Origin: humeral head - medial epicondyle; ulnar head - olecranon
Insertion: pisiform, hamate and base of 5th metacarpal
Innervation: ulnar nerve
Movements: flexion and adduction at wrist
Describe flexor digitorum superficialis.
Origin: medial epicondyle and radius
Insertion: base of middle phalanx of digits 2-5
Innervation: median nerve
Movements: flexion of MP joints and proximal IP joints (2-5), flexion at the wrist
Describe brachioradialis.
Origin: proximal aspect of lateral supracondylar ridge of humerus
Insertion: distal end of radius, before styloid process
Innervation: radial nerve
Movements: flexion at elbow
Describe flexor pollicis longus.
Origin: anterior surface of radius and overlaps onto interosseous membrane
Insertion: base of thumb
Innervation: anterior interosseous branch of median nerve
Movements: flexes the IP and MP joint of the thumb
Describe flexor digitorum profundus.
Origin: ulna and interosseous membrane
Insertion: distal phalanges of 2-5
Innervation: 4,5 - ulnar nerve; 2,3 anterior interosseous branch of median nerve
Movements: flexion of distal IP joints of fingers, flexion of MP joints and wrist
Describe pronator quadratus.
Origin: anterior surface of ulna
Insertion: anterior surface of radius
Innervation: anterior interosseous branch of median nerve
Movements: pronation
