Anatomy/Physiology of the Throat Flashcards
What are the two parts of the oral cavity and where is each?
Oral vestibule (between lips and teeth) Oral cavity proper
What are the boundaries of the oral cavity?
Lips to palatoglossal arch (anterior pillar)
Palate to floor of mouth/tongue
Buccal mucosa
What are the functions of the oral cavity?
Taste Mastication Speech Digestion Swallowing
What is the nerve supply of the different parts of the tongue?
Anterior 2/3- sensation by lingual nerve (branch of CNV3), taste by chorda tympani (branch of CNVII)
Posterior 1/3- supplied by CNIX
What are the roles of the intrinsic muscles of the tongue?
To alter the shape of the tongue
What are the roles of the extrinsic muscles of the tongue?
To alter the position of the tongue
What are the extrinsic muscles of the tongue?
Genioglossus
Styloglossus
Hypoglossus
Palatoglossus
What are the functions of the tongue?
Taste
Mastication
Swallowing
Speech
What is the nerve supply of the muscles of the tongue?
Hypoglossal nerve supply all except the palatoglossus which is supplied by the pharyngeal plexus (CNIX-X)
What are the muscles of mastication?
Lateral pterygoid
Medial pterygoid
Temporalis
Masseter
What is the nerve supply of the muscles of mastication?
CNV3 (mandibular branch of trigeminal nerve)
What is the function of the muscles of mastication?
Act on the temperomandibular joint to aid in chewing
What are the boundaries of the oropharynx?
Lower border of soft palate to upper margin of epiglottis
Palatoglossal arch to posterior pharyngeal wall
Faucial pillars and palatine tonsils
What kind of epithelium is present in the oropharynx?
Stratified, non-keratinised squamous epithelium
What is the nerve supply of the oropharynx?
Pharyngeal plexus- CNIX and CNX
