Q

Describe the anatomy of the thyroid gland.

A
  • Endocrine gland
  • 2 lobes, joined by isthmus
  • Produces thyroid hormone and calcitonin (lowers Ca and raises phosphate)

Q

Describe the main arteries of the neck.

A

Common carotid artery divides at C4 level.

External carotid is only artery with branches in neck;

  • Superior thyroid
  • Ascending pharyngeal
  • Lingual
  • Occipital
  • Facial
  • Posterior auricular
  • Maxillary
  • Superficial temporal

Q

Describe the lymph node groups in the neck.

A
  • 600 lymph nodes in the head and neck.
  • Receive lymph/tissue waste product.
  • Drain to cisterna chyli then to thoracic duct.
  • Described in groups and levels.

Q

What do the submandibular nodes drain?

A

Tongue, nose, paranasal sinuses, submandibular gland and oral cavity.

17
Q

What do the submental nodes drain?

A

Lips and floor of mouth.

18
Q

What do the supraclavicular nodes drain?

A

Breast, oesophagus and solid viscera.

19
Q

Describe a thyroglossal cyst.

A
  • Dilatation of thyroglossal duct remnant.
  • May become infected.
  • Midline; grows with age.
  • Moves on tongue protrusion.
  • USS needed prior to removal to ensure functioning thyroid tissue elsewhere.
  • Chance of recurrence after removal.
