Anatomy & Physiology of the Auditory System Flashcards
Anatomical Directions: Superior vs. Inferior
- Superior - upper
* Inferior - lower
Anatomical Directions:
Medial vs. Lateral
- Medial - towards the midline (e.g., looking into the ear)
* Lateral - away from the midline (e.g., looking out of the ear)
Anatomical Directions:
Anterior vs. Posterior
- Anterior - towards the front
* Posterior - towards the back
Anatomical Direction:
Ventral vs. Dorsal
- Ventral - front surface (on animals ventral refers to the belly)
- Dorsal - back surface (on animals dorsal refers to the back)
Anatomical Sections: Saggital
- aka median
* left & right
Anatomical Sections: Transverse
- aka horizontal
* top & bottom
Anatomical Sections: Coronal
- aka frontal
* front & back
Peripheral vs. Central Auditory System
Peripheral System • Outer Ear • Middle Ear • Inner Ear • 8th/Auditory Nerve (Proximal/Cochlear end)
Central System
• 8th/Auditory Nerve (Distal/Brainstem end)
•Auditory Brainstem nuclei
• Auditory Cortex
8th Cranial Nerve aka…
- Vestibulocochlear Nerve
- Auditory or Cochlear Nerve (auditory branch)
- Vestibular Nerve (vestibular branch)
Audiologists assess the function of the peripheral & central auditory system to…
…diagnose hearing loss, & if present, aid in determining site of lesion & pathology
Temporal Bone
• The bulk of the peripheral auditory system is housed within the temporal bone • 5 sections - Squamous - Mastoid - Tympanic Part (portion) - Styloid process - Petrous (pyramid)
Temporal Bone: Squamous
- very thin flat plate
* anterior to the ear
Temporal Bone: Mastoid
• contains the mastoid process • forms portion of EAC • used in BC testing • honeycombed (NOT solid bone) - Prone to infection - Mastoiditis: fluid that got into mastoid bone
Temporal Bone: Tympanic Part (portion)
• bony part of the ear canal
Temporal Bone: Styloid process
- Does not contribute to the auditory system
* attachment point for tongue & larynx muscles
Temporal Bone: Petrous (pyramid)
- very hard
* contains the inner ear & internal auditory meatus through which the 8th CN travels
The Outer Ear consists of the:
• Pinna (aka Auricle) • External Auditory Meatud (aka Ear Canal) • Tympanic Membrane (eardrum)? -much debate on whether the TM is part of the outer or middle ear
Construction of the Pinna
• Externally visible aspect of the ear • Primarily constructed from elastic cartilage -also contains some muscle tissues (most are non functioning) • Fat pad in the lobule
Pinna Landmarks
- Helix
- Tragus
- Inter-Tragal Notch
- Anti-Tragus
- Concha
- Anti-Helix
- Triangular Fossa
- Scaphoid Fossa
- Crus of the Helix
Pinna Landmark: Helix
• ridged rim along most of the perimeter of the pinna
Pinna Landmark: Tragus
• posterior directed projection or ridge
Pinna Landmark: Inter-Tragal Notch
• space b/w the tragus & anti-tragus
Pinna Landmark: Anti-Tragus
• upward-pointing mound that is located posteroinferior to the tragus & superior to the earlobe
Pinna Landmark: Concha
- cup-shaped depression
* entrance to the EAC
