Anatomy & Physiology Intro Flashcards
Anatomy
The study of the body’s structure
Physiology
The study of the body’s function
Anatomical Planes
Sagittal(Left) or Lateral(Right) (Vertical Center of body)
Axial or Transverse (Horizontal Center of body)
Integumentary System Main Organs
Skin, Hair, Nails, and Exocrine Glands.
Function #1 (protection)
Skin protects body from basic elements (water, wind, & UV light)
Function #2 (sensory)
Your skin can sense change in environment and contains special nerves that sense pain, touch & surface temperature.
Function #3 (thermoregulation)
A sympathetic nervous system that monitors temperature and activates appropriate responses.
Function #4 (vitamin D synthesis)
A synthetic nerve within the epidermal layer of skin that absorbs calcium and phosphorous; too much or too little sun exposure will result in critical harm.
Skin
Epidermis, Dermis, & Hypodermis
Epidermis
First layer of skin; waterproof protective barrier and gives skin tone.
Dermis
Plays a critical in healing wounds, a protective layer for the hypodermis, & provides nourishment for the epidermis.
Hypodermis
cushions your body, stores fat, & keeps your body attached to your bones and cartilage.
Keratin
Critical to strengthening and repairing damaged hairs, nails, & skin.
Keratinocyte
Important for providing skin structure and functioning the immune system.
Stratum Basale
One of the most important layers of the skin because it’s the only place where cell can germinate (divide via mitosis).
