Normal anatomical position
Standing face forward Arms at side Palms facing forward
Midline (Right/ Left)
Line through middle of N.A.P. (top of head, down torso, through groin, dividing legs) (Left and Right refer to PATIENT’S left/ right side)
Medial/ Lateral
Medial: objects TOWARDS midline Lateral: objects AWAY from midline
Distal/ Proximal
With regard to LIMBS: Distal: Away from torso Proximal: Next to torso
Transverse line (Superior/ Inferior)
Line dividing the body at the waist to: Superior (Upper) Inferior (Lower)
Midaxillary Line (Anterior/ Posterior)
Line down the center (top of head, down torso, to feet) of side to: Anterior: Front (ventral) Posterior: Back (dorsal)
A: Midline
B: LEFT
C: RIGHT
D: Superior
E: Transverse Line
F: Inferior
G: Lateral
H: Medial
I: Proximal
J: Distal
A: Midaxillary Line
