anatomy & physiology Flashcards
What’s the difference between anatomy and physiology?
anatomy is the scientific study of the body’s structures and physiology is the scientific study of the chemistry/physics of the structures
what are the different types of anatomy?
gross anatomy (the study of the larger structures of the body, those visible without the aid of magnification and microscopic anatomy (the study of structures of the body that can only be observed with the use of a microscope or magnification devices)
what are the 11 organ systems of the body?
- urinary-
- integumentary
- digestive
- cardiovascular
- nervous
- muscular
- skeletal
- endocrine
- respiratory
- thoracic
- lymphatic
integumentary organ system
hair skin and nails
skeletal organ system
cartilage bones and joints. allows movement
muscular organ system
skeletal muscle and tendons. enables movement and helps maintain body temp
nervous organ system
brain spinal cord and peripheral nerve. detects and processes info
endocrine organ system
pituitary gland thyroid gland pancreas adrenal gland testes and ovaries.
cardiovascular organ system
heart and blood vessels. delivers oxygen and nutrients to tissues
lymphatic organ system
thymus lymph nodes spleen and lymphatic vessels. returns fluid to blood and defends against pathogens
respiratory organ system
nasal passage trachea and lungs. removes carbon dioxide from the body and delivers oxygen to blood
digestive organ system
stomach, liver, gall bladder, and large intestine. processes food for the body and removes waste
urinary organ system
kidneys and urinary bladder. controls water balance in the body and removes waster from blood
sagittal plane
divides body into right and left sides
horizontal (transverse) plane
divides body into upper and lower halves
