Anatomy & Physiology Flashcards
What are Ceruminous glands?
Modified sweat glands
What are Sebaceous glands?
Oil secreting glands
What frequency does the pinna amplify through resonance?
Sounds centred at 5kHz
What is the name of the bony hollow core that the cochlea spirals around?
Modiolus
Name the 3 Ossciles in order
Malleus, Incus & Stapes
What is the main function of the middle ear?
Acoustic Impedance - opposition to the flow of sound through a surface
Due to the diff between air & fluid the ME does impedance matching to increase the transfer of the sound
What state is the Eustachian Tube usually found?
Closed
What is the handle of malleus called in the TM
The Manubrium (long process)
Where does the Manubrium attach?
Pars tensa of the TM
What muscle restricts the movement of the malleus?
Tensor Tympani
What does the Stapedius muscle do?
Contracts to loud sounds 80dbHL or greater & restricts the movement of the stapes footplate protecting the cochlea from loud sounds
What is the lever effect?
The arrangement of the ossicles create this lever like effect which converts the low pressure air borne sounds at the TM to smaller high pressure sounds at the stapes footplate
Which middle ear ossicle does the oval window attach to?
The Stapes
True or False - The human ear is not particularly sensitive to very low & very high frequency sounds?
False
