Anatomy of the pituitary gland Flashcards
What are the three mechanisms of cell communication?
autocrine, paracrine and endocrine
what is autocrine signaling?
the signaling molecules are released into ECF they act on themselves, so the cells signals itself
what is paracrine signaling?
cells signal its close neighbors so signaling molecules have to diffuse bait to reach target cells
what is endocrine signaling?
the signaling molecule must enter the blood and be carried and has to then leave the blood before reaching its target site, cell signals via molecules transported by the blood to target distant cells
how many endocrine glands/gland pairs are they?
7
what are the 7 endocrine gland/gland pairs?
hypothalamus and pituitary gland 4 parathyroid glands and thyroid gland 2 adrenal (suprarenal) glands and pancreas 2 ovaries in the broad ligaments 2 testes in the scrotum
where is hypophysis found?
cranial cavity
where are the 4 parathyroid and thyroid gland found?
neck
where are the 2 adrenal (suprarenal) glands and pancreas found?
abdomen (in the retroperitoneum)
where are the 2 ovaries in the broad ligaments found?
pelvis (female)
where are the 2 testes in the scrotum found
in the perineum (male)
what is the diencephalon?
the thalamus and hypothalamus together
what is the central core of the cerebrum?
the diencephalon
where do the connections from the diencephalon go?
right and lift cerebral hemispheres and the midbrain
what does the brainstem consist of?
the midbrain, pons and medulla oblangata
