Anatomy of the NS I Flashcards
Parts of a neuron
dendrite, axon, soma
3 types of neuron
Sensory neuron, interneuron, motor neuron
other cells of NS besides neurons
GLIA: oligodendrocytes, schwan cells, astrocytes, microglia
wherea are oligodendrocytes and schwann cells located?
oligodendrocytes: cns
schwann cells: pns
where are satellite cells located?
pns
what is the function of satellite cells?
they surround neuron cell bodies in ganglia
they regulate gas, nutrient and neurotransmitter levels around neurons in ganglia
What is the function of Schwann cells?
- surround axons in PNS
- myelination of peripheral axons
- participate in the repair process after injury
What is the function of oligodendrocytes?
- myelination of CNS axons
- provision of structural framework
What is the function of astrocytes?
- maintaining the blood-capillary barrier
- provision of structural support
- regulation of ion, gas, and nutrient concentrations
- absorption and recycling of neurotransmitters
- formation of post-injury scar tissue
What is the function of microglia?
-removal of cell debris, waste, and pathogens by phagocytosis
Ependymal cells are found from?
CNS
What is the function of ependymal cells?
Lining the ventricles of the brain and the central canal (spinal cord)
-assistance in the production, circulation, and monitoring of the cerebrospinal fluid
Which structures form the CNS?
brain and spinal cord
Which structures form the PNS?
nerves and ganglia
What types of tracts there exist in NS?
Ascending (sensorial) tracts
Descending (motor) tracts
