Anatomy of the Nervous System Flashcards
What makes up the Central Nervous System?
Brain
Spinal chord
Two subsystems of the Peripheral Nervous System
Somatic
Autonomic
Role of the Somatic nervous system
Interacts with the external environment
Role of afferent nerves
brings sensory signals to the CNS (Arrive)
Role of efferent nerves
brings motor signals from the CNS (Exit)
Role of Automatic nervous system
regulates internal environment
Sympathetic vs Parasympathetic in the ANS
Sympathetic mobilises energy and Parasympathetic conserves
Axons
Dendrites
Synapses
point of specialised connection between two neurons
Neuronal Classification
- Number of processes
- Length of axon
- Shape of cell body
Number of processes
Bipolar - one dendrite
Multipolar - more than one dendrite
Length of axon
Golgi type 1/projection - long axon to target
Golgi type 2 - interneurons - shorter + within a structure
Oligodendrocytes
Glia cells that wrap around neurons, produce myelin which insulates some axons in order to speed up conduction - AP jumps to nodes of ranvier
Astrocytes
cover the outer surface of blood vessels in the brain - contract or relax based on blood flow demand of brain regions
