Anatomy of the Lower Limb Flashcards
How many muscles in the anterior compartment of the thigh?
4
Thigh flexors: pectineus, iliopsoas, sartorious
Hip extensors: quadriceps femoris
What nerve supplies the anterior compartment of the thigh?
Femoral nerve (L2-4)
How many muscles in the medial compartment of the thigh?
5
Thigh adductors: adductor longus/brevis/magnus, obturator externus, gracilis
What nerve supplies the medial compartment of the thigh?
Obturator nerve (L2-4), except for the hamstring part of the adductor magnus which is supplied by the tibial nerve
How many muscles are in the posterior compartment of the thigh?
3
Thigh extensors/leg flexors: semitendinosus, semimembranosus, biceps femoris
What nerve supplies the posterior compartment of the thigh?
Tibial division of the sciatic nerve (L5-S2), apart from the short head of the biceps femoris which is supplied by the common peroneal nerve
How many muscles are in the superficial compartment of the gluteal region?
4
Gluteus maximus/medius/minimis + tensor fascia lata
What nerve supplies the superficial compartment of the gluteal region?
All supplied by the superior gluteal nerve except from the gluteus maximus which is supplied by the inferior gluteal nerve
How many muscles are in the deep compartment of the gluteal region?
5 Piriformis Obturator Internus Superior and inferior gemelli Quadratus femoris
What are the nerve supplies to the deep compartment of the gluteal region?
Piriformis = nerve to piriformis
Obturator internus = nerve to obturator internus
Superior gemelli = nerve to obturator internus
Inferior gemelli = nerve to quadratus femoris
Quadratus femoris = nerve to quadratus femoris
How many muscles are in the anterior compartment of the lower leg?
4
Ankle dorsiflexors/toe extensors: tibialis anterior, extensor digitorum longus, extensor hallucis longus, fibularis tertius
What nerve supplies the anterior compartment of the lower leg?
Deep peroneal/fibular nerve
How many muscles are in the lateral compartment of the lower leg?
2
Foot evertors/plantar flexors: fibularis longus + fibularis brevis
How many muscles are in the superficial compartment of the posterior region of the lower leg?
3
Plantar flexors of ankle: gastrocnemius, soleus + plantaris
How many muscles in the deep compartment of the posterior region of the lower leg?
4
Toe flexors: popliteus, flexor hallucis longus, flexor digitorum longus, tibialis posterior
