Anatomy of the female ganital system Flashcards
Exam
It is a pad of fat lying the symphysis pubis covered by skin and pubic hair from the time of puberty
Mons Veneris Mons Pubis
The outer two large folds of fatty skin and passing back from the mons veneris to the perineum
Labia Majora
Two thin folds of modified skin situated inside the labia majora, that contain main two opening to the urethra and vagina and also protects them
Labia Minora
It is an erectile organ corresponding to male penis, It is rich with blood and nerve supply so, it is very sensitive and vascular and plays a role in the orgasm of sexual intercourse
Clitoris
The area between the inner aspects of the labia minora It is extending anteriorly to the clitoris and posteriorly to the perineum
Vestibule
Area in the female reproductive system that contains 6 openings including the uretheral orifice and two skene glands
Vestibule
Two glands that are found posteriorly on either sides of the urethra and secrete small amounts of mucous that serve lubrication
Two Skene Glands
The short stretch of skin starting at the bottom of the vulva and extending to the anus and it is made up of skin and muscle
Perineum
The area in women that often tears during birth (episiotomy). To accomodate passage of the child and this is apparently natural
Perineum
What are the 6 components of the female external genital system?
- Mons Veneris / Mons Pubis
- Lapia Majora
- Lapia Minora
- Clitoris
- Vestibule
- Perineum
A fibromuscular tube from the vulva to the uterus
Vagina
Location of the vagina?
Its located between the bladder and rectum
Length of the anterior and posterior wall of the vagina?
Anterior wall: 8-9 cm
Posterior wall: 10 -11 cm
Structure of the vagina?
Lined by stratified squamous epithelium that is elevated into folds (rugae). This rugae permit great distension without damage
What is the difference between the two skene glands and the two bartholin glands?
Function:
Two skene glands: Lubricate the uretheral opening
Two bartholin glands: Lubricate the vagina during sexual intercourse
Location:
Two skene glands: Posteriorly on either sides of the urethra
Two bartholin glands: Posteriorly on either sides of the vagina
Function of the vagina?
- As a passageway for the menstrual flow
- As a passageway for uterine secretions
- As a birth canal during labor
- With the help of two Bartholin’s glands becomes lubricated during sexual intercourse
It is a hollow, muscular and a pear-shaped organ
Uterus
What’s the name of the lower third of the uterus? and it’s function? and it’s length?
The cervix.
Connects the uterus to the vagina.
2.5-3.0 cm.
Measures of the uterus? Weight, Long, Wide, Depth
Weight in non pregnant women: 60-70 gm
7.5 long X 5 wide X 2.5 depths
Function of the uterus?
- It shelters the fetus during pregnancy
2. It expels the uterine contents following pregnancy
Location/Position of the uterus?
It is located in the cavity of the true pelvis
Anterior: Bladder Posterior: Rectum Lateral: Broad ligaments, fallopian tubes and ovaries Superior: Intestine Inferior: Vagina
Structure of the uterus?
- Fundus
- Cornua
- Corpus/Body
- Isthmus
- Cervix
It is the upper outer angles of the uterus, where the fallopian tubes join
Cornua
It is the domed upper wall between the insertions of the fallopian tubes
Fundus
It makes up the upper 2/3 of the uterus and is the greater part of the uterus
Corpus/Body
It is the narrow area between the cavity and the cervix, it enlarges during pregnancy
Isthmus
It has two OS (internal and external)
Cervix
It is a small round opening at the lower end of the cervix towards the vagina.
External Os
It is the narrow opening between the isthmus and the cervix
Internal Os
What does ante-version means?
It leans forward
What does ante-flexed means?
It bends forward
layers of the uterus?
- Endometrium
- Myometrium
- Perimetrium
Its the layer that forms of a lining of the epithelium (mucous membrane) and It is constantly changing in the thickness throughout menstrual cycle (It sheds during menstruation)
Endometrium
The layer which is the muscle coat, thick in the upper part of the uterus and thin in the isthmus and cervix
Myometrium
A layer of the uterus which is the outer membrane,of the uterus and extend to the peritoneum
Perimetrium
Structure of the fallopian tube?
- Interstitial Portion
- Isthmus
- Ampullary
- Infundibular
Quickening in primi-para and multi-para
Primi-Para: 18:20th week
Multi-Para: 16:18 week
