Anatomy of the Airway Flashcards
Function of airway
- Sound generated in larynx where pitch and volume manipulated
- Swallowing: backward motion of tongue forces epiglottis over the glottis
What are the vocal folds held together by?
adducting arytenoid cartilages
True vocal cords
folds
False vocal cords
vestibular folds
Location of larynx in comparison to vertebrae?
C3-6 for adults
C2-3 for infants
4 cartilages responsible for larynx?
- Thyroid Cartilage
- Cricoid Cartilage
- Epiglottis
- Arytenoid Cartilages
Thyroid Cartilage
“adam’s apple”
Cricoid Cartilage
protective shield –> ring of hyaline cartilage that forms inferior wall of larynx
Epiglottis
large, leaf-shaped elastic cartilage
- closes off glottis when swallowing
Arytenoid Cartilages
- paired cartilage –> influence position and tension on vocal cords
Musculature Innervation
Cricothyroid –> external laryngeal
Everything else –> recurrent laryngeal
Internal Laryngeal Innervation
sensory to larynx above and including VC
External Laryngeal Innvervation
motor to cricothyroid muscle –> VC tensor
Recurrent Laryngeal Innervation
All other intrinsic muscles of larynx
- Sensory below VC into trachea
B/l vagus nerve injury?
–> decreased phonation and mid-position of VC
