Anatomy of Skeletal Muscle Flashcards
Sarcolemma
A plasma membrane that lies under the endomysium, a sheath of connective tissue that surrounds a muscle fibre
Sarcoplasm
The muscle cell’s cytoplasm, which is contained by the sarcolemma.
Sarcomeres
composed of two main protein filaments —actin and myosin. (dark and light bands alternating, making it look stripped)
Sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR)
Network of channels in each muscle fibre that transport the electrochemical substances involved in muscle activation
Sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) function
a system of tubes and sacs in muscle cells. Its main job is to store and release calcium, which is needed for muscles to contract. When a muscle gets a signal to move, the SR releases calcium, making the muscle tighten. After the movement, the SR takes the calcium back in, and the muscle relaxes.
Endomysium
This is the connective tissue that surrounds each individual muscle fiber.
Perimysium
This connective tissue surrounds bundles of muscle fibers, which are called fascicles.
Epimysium
This is the outer layer of connective tissue that covers the entire muscle. At both ends, it turns into a tendon to attach the muscle to a bone.
