Anatomy of female reproductive tract Flashcards
1
Q
Draw the blood supply of the pelvis
A
2
Q
Explain the blood supply of the pelvic viscera
A
- The pelvic viscera are supplied by the gonadal arteries and from branches of the internal iliac artery (anterior division)
-
Gonadal arteries
- Direct branches of abdominal aorta
- Descend with the ureters
- Supply the gonads
- In female also supply the lateral half uterine tube
- Male gonadal artery is the testicular artery
3
Q
Explain how the internal iliac artery divides
A
-
Common Iliac Artery
- External Iliac
-
Internal Iliac
- Anterior division
- Posterior division
- Anterior division supplies the pelvic viscera. Typically 7 or 8 branches BUT many variations
4
Q
Explain the anterior division of the internal iliac artery
A
Typically 7 or 8 branches BUT many variations
- Umbilical → Superior vesicle (bladder, urethra)
- Obturator → Towards obturator foramen
- Inferior vesicle (Male) / Vaginal (Female)
- Uterine → Uterus, cervix vagina, uterine tubes
- Middle Rectal → Rectum
- Inferior Gluteal → Gluteal Region
- Internal Pudendal → Perineum (deep to lev. ani)
5
Q
Explain the uterine artery
A
Uterine artery
- Ascending branch: Uterine body (A)•Descending branch: Cervix & Vagina (D)
- Vaginal Artery (V) may be a branch of the uterine artery
Anastomoses of uterine & ovarian arteries
- Both contribute to uterine tube supply
- Anastomose within the broad ligament
6
Q
What is the relationship between the uterine artery and the ureter?
A
Water under the bridge
- Uterine artery over the ureter
- At ischial spine
7
Q
Label the uterus
- & layers
A
Fungus up and body middle
Cervix opening → internal cervical os and external cervical os
Cervical canal
Endometrium → inner layer
Myometrium → mostly muscular layer
Perimetrium → outer layer
8
Q
Label
A
- Fimbriae not connected to ovaries → abnormailty e.g ectopic pregnancy
