Anatomy of a Volcano Flashcards
A VENT, HILL OR MOUNTAIN FROM WHICH MOLTEN OR HOT ROCKS WITH GASEOUS MATERIAL HAVE BEEN EJECTED.
Volcano
a volcano that is erupting or has shown it may erupt in the future
Active
a sleeping volcano that can awaken in the future and become active
Dormant
a dead volcano that is unlikely to erupt again.
Extinct
WHAT ARE THE 3 TYPES OF VOLCANO ACCORDING TO SHAPE
- Composite Volcano
- Cinder Cone Volcano
- Shield Volcano
Also known as, stratovolcano. This is large.
nearly perfect sloped structure formed from The allernate solidification of both lava and pyroclastic deposits.
(A type of volcano wherein lava ejects out between multiple cinders)
Composite Volcano
This is built from ejected
lava fragments. They have a steep slope, wide craler, and is most abundant of the three major volcanoes
(A volcano which ejects lava through 2 cinders)
Cinder Cone Volcano
This is formed by the
Lava Flows
accumulation of lava oozes out from The volcano. Since non-viscous lava can flow freely. a broad, slightly doomed structure that resembles a warrior’s shield is formed.
(A volcano that has numerous cinders for lava to flow in between)
Shield Volcano
Examples of Composite Volcanoes
- Mayon Volcano
- Mt. Fuji
- Mt. Mayon
Examples of Cinder Cone Volcanoes
- Taal Volcano
- Paricutín
Examples of Shield Volcanoes
- Kilauea
- Diamond Head
It is a stream-driven eruption as the hot rocks come in contact with water.
PHREATIC /HYDROTHERMAL
It is a violent eruption due to the contact between water and magma.
PHREATOMAGMATIC
It is a period weak to violent eruption
characterized by fountain lava.
STROMBOLIAN
It is characterized by tall eruption that reach up to 20 km high with pyroclastic flow and ashfall tephra.
