Definition of a hip fracture?
any fracture of the femur distal to the femoral head and 5cm below the lesser trochanter
What are the primary blood supplies to the femoral neck?
Medial and lateral circumflex arteries
Why does leg shortening and external rotation occur in a neck of femur fracture?
Unopposed action of psoas - psoas pulls the leg upwards and externally rotates it; unopposed iliopsoas action causes shortening and external rotation
What does superior gluteal nerve damage cause?
Weak abduction and Trendelenburg gait
What does obturator nerve damage cause?
middle thigh paresthesia, groin pain and/or adduction weakness
What does peroneal nerve/sciatic nerve damage cause?
Foot drop, buttock pain down posterior thigh, paresthesia
