Anatomy Midterm Flashcards
What is lymphatic system?
two vital functions for returning fluids to the circulatory system and protecting the body from pathogens.
What is the thymus gland?
The thymus gland, located behind your sternum and between your lungs, is only active until puberty.
After puberty, the thymus starts to slowly shrink and become replaced by fat.
{Thymosin is the hormone of the thymus, and it stimulates the development of disease-fighting T cells.}
Where can you touch lymphatic nodes?
Behind ear, neck, clavicle, arm pit, Groind
Function of macrophages
Already present in the area and they engulf cell debris and pathogens; also they release chemicals to attract more phagocytes to the area
(Eat microorganisms)
What’s the function of leukocytes?
Move out of the blood and into the tissue easier to fight pathogens
What is immunity?
Ability to defend against defenses
Or
Ability of an organism to resist a particular infection or toxin by the action of specific antibodies or sensitized white blood cells.
What are the 2 different types of immunity?
Inborn Immunity and Acquired Immunity
Antiserum
A serum prepared from human or animal sources containing antigens specific for combatting an infectious disease.
Antitoxin
An antibody that is capable of neutralising specific toxins that are causative agents of disease.
Difference between antiserum and antitoxin
antiserum is (medicine) a serum prepared from human or animal sources containing antigens specific for combatting an infectious disease while antitoxin is an antibody that is capable of neutralising specific toxins that are causative agents of disease.
What come before and after antiserum or antitoxin?
Antitoxin is before and Antiserum is after
Red bone marrow
Site in which lymphoid stem cells develop from pluripotential stem cell
Mature T Cell
H
Responsible for assisting B cells
Mature T Cell
C
Responsible for cell-mediated immunity
MatureBcell
Responsible for antibody-mediated immunity
