anatomy + function of cerebrum Flashcards
gray matter
superficial
white matter
deep and the axons that are myelinated
gyri
large folds or mounds on the brain tissue - increase surface area (more neurons)
sulci
grooves found in between gyri -if large enough they are called fissures
corpus callosum
connects left and right hemispheres of the brain
hypothalamus
regulates things that aren’t under conscious control + hormones
pituitary gland
release the hormones that the hypothalamus regulates
pineal gland
regulates body rhythm
pons
bridge between the brain and cerebellum
medulla oblongata
where signals come in and out of brain - cross way to cerebrum (where pyramidal decussation occurs)
midbrain
controls reflexes and is the reward center
cerebellum
coordination of movement, balance, and posture
thalamus
major relay station (messages go through here)
hippocampus
memory
amygdala
manages scary emotion (fear)
