Anatomy - Chapter 1 Flashcards
Review basic terms
Median Plane
divides unto right and left halves
Sagittal planes
divides into anterior and posterior parts.
Transverse planes AKA transaxial AKA axial
divides into superior and inferior parts.
Superior
– nearer vertex, topmost point of cranium
Cranial
– toward cranium
Caudal
– towards feet or toward coccyx
Posterior/Dorsal
- back surface
Anterior
– front surface
Rostral
– anterior part of brain [towards rostrum (L. For beak)]
e.g., the frontal lobe of the brain is rostral to the cerebellum
Medial
– nearer median plane
e.g., 5th digit of the hand (little finger) is medial to the other digits.
Lateral
– farther away from median plane
Dorsum
– superior aspect when body part protrudes anteriorly from body
e.g., dorsum of the tongue, nose, penis, or foot and posterior hand surface
Dorsal surface
- surface of the hands, the feet, and the digits corresponding with dorsum
Palm
– posterior hand surface
Palmar surface
- surface of the hand and fingers corresponding to the palm
